Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to use Jacques Lacan's theory in the context of an analysis of theatrical performance – ‘Familie’. Directed by Milo Rau, is a play telling the true story of a family who committed suicide, played by another real-life acting family. This therefore raises questions about the order of representation, as well as provoking reflection on the play's very subject matter. Lacanian theory can be a graceful tool for interpreting works of art, as the Slovenian lacanist Slavoj Žižek has repeatedly proved. The text is merely an attempt to delineate the validity of such an approach, to show what is invisible at first glance, although it has always remained on the surface. It also addresses the subject of shock and the reception of such narratives in theatre, asking questions about their validity, and their role in broader aspects of society.
