Summary/Abstract: This article examines the historical development of translation in Romania with particular emphasis on the interplay between translational practice and the institutionalization of Translation Studies as an academic field. It follows the transformation of translation from a primarily cultural and nation-building endeavour into a professional domain embedded within contemporary higher education structures. The paper contends that although translation has been instrumental in Romania’s processes of cultural modernization and European integration, the development of Translation Studies as a consolidated and coherent discipline has progressed unevenly. By identifying significant phases, key actors, and major institutional configurations, the study offers a structured analysis of the Romanian landscape and outlines the principal challenges and prospects shaping its present position within the wider European framework.
