Summary/Abstract: During the course of XVIII century, Eastern Orthodox Eparchy of Timişoara was one the most important dioceses of Serbian Orthodox Church in Habsburg Monarchy. Up to 1716, when its territory was liberated from Ottoman rule, the Eparchy had been under direct jurisdiction of the Serbian Patriarchate of Peć. With the establishment of autonomous Metropolitanate of Belgrade, the Eparchy was placed under its jurisdiction and later it remained under the jurisdiction of Metropolitanate of Karlovci. Consequent wars (1683–1699, 1716–1718, 1737–1739) had greatly aflicted the territory of Banat and its Eastern Orthodox population of Serbian and Romanian ethnicity. During the time of wars, parochial network was almost totally destroyed. The region of Banat was later repopulated in several stages, marked by political and administrative changes. Demographical renewal, repopulation of old villages and creation of new settlements had had direct influence on reestablishment and consolidation of parochial structures of the Eparchy. Its borders were not significatly changed, but its internal administrative divisons were affected by creation of civilian districts after the establishment of Habsburg rule (1716–1718). Northern and western regions of Banat, from the city of Timişoara to the rivers of Moriš and Tisa, remained under the jurisdiction of the Eparchy. Subsequent concriptions of the Eparchy were conducted in 1727, 1733, 1758, 1764, 1767, 1771 and 1773. The Eparchy was divided into several protopresbiteriates, numbering from six up to seventeen. Gradually, that number was consolidated at ten. Protopresbiterates were further devided into parishes, usually consisting of one or few villages. Maximal number of parishes was 287 in 1779. By the end of the period, Eparchy of Timişoara became the richest eparchy of the Metropolitanate of Karlovci.
