Summary/Abstract: The political restraints, military and police repression of the Austro-Hungarian authorities, primarily directed towards the Serbs, were relaxed in the last year of the war and this led to gradual revival of political life. The peoples living in Bosnia and Herzegovina received the breakdown of the Austro-Hungarian administration with different emotions and expectations. The Serbs, the most numerous people who were exposed to cruel persecution during the war, openly and enthusiastically welcomed the moment when the Drina River finally ceased to be the border which separated them from their compatriots in Serbia. The Croats and Muslims were a strong support to the Austro-Hungarian authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war, although among them there were some pro-Yugoslav orientated individuals supporting the South Slav unification. The national and agrarian issue, as well as the internal organization of the newly created state, were the key factors for the political differentiation. Political gathering in Bosnia and Herzegovina had national and religious character, although there were attempts to organize and group the population on a supranational or Yugoslav basis. The Radical Party, The Yugoslav Democratic Party and The Alliance of Farmers had the strongest influence and the highest number of supporters among the Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
