SPANISH FLU IN VELIKA KIKINDA (1918–1920) The Affects of the First Pandemic of 20th Century

Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the breakout of Spanish flu (Spanish death, Spanish fever) in Velika Kikinda in the autumn of 1918 and the impact of the virus on the whole social climate of the city. There were three waves of the Spanish flu, of whom the second was the deadliest one. In the article, it was explained why the epidemic was barely noticed in the historiography, both worldwide and domestic (censorship, the end of First World War, political earthquakes that led to the making of the new countries and destruction of the old ones). Spanish flu killed approximately 200 people in Velika Kikinda from October to December 1918, both civilians and soldiers. Official number of 25 people that died because of the Spanish flu, according to Register of the deceased from 1918, is simply too small. In the same period (October–December 1918), 154 residents of Velika Kikinda died from pneumonia and tuberculosis, which is a far larger number compared to 1917 (only 25 residents). It is almost certain that the people were infected by the Spanish flu virus, but lungs necrosis led to death from pneumonia or tuberculosis.
