Summary/Abstract: Mojsije Georgijević, a Serb from Osijek, a lawyer, was a participant in both the Serbian and Croatian movements in 1848. He participated in the May Assembly and was a member of the Main Board, a member of the Commission for drafting the constitution for Serbian Vojvodina. He actively participated in the work of the Croatian Parliament, especially in the debates on the alliance of the Triune Kingdom and the Serbian Vojvodina, which was decided by the May Assembly and the Croatian Parliament. In the decisions of the Croatian Parliament, the creation of a strong state union was interpreted more as the annexation of Vojvodina to the Triune Kingdom, than as the unification of equal units, in which elements of Greater Croatia’s claims to Vojvodina could be seen. Disagreements arose from the very beginning regarding the affiliation of Srem. Georgijevic was a consistent supporter of the national unity of Serbs and Croats, as well as the formation of the Serbo-Croatian state alliance. He considered language to be the determinant of a nation, not a religion. He expressed his views on the nation and national unity of Serbs and Croats during his entire career in 1848– 1849. After the enactment of the Oktrois Constitution in March 1849, as the Patriarch’s envoy, he conveyed to Ban Jelačić the dissatisfaction of the Serbian people with the provisions of the Oktrois Constitution on Vojvodina, with a request that the ban advocate the recognition of Serbian Vojvodina and provide the necessary military assistance. At the ban’s request, he drafted a Memorandum where he presented his views on the alliance of the Triune Kingdom and Serbian Vojvodina and on the manner of creating a state union. At the beginning of 1849, it became increasingly clear that Austria would not violate the integrity of Hungary by recognizing Vojvodina; The patriarch and the Government of Vojvodina estimated that the unification with Croatia would avoid the return of Vojvodina to Hungary, so Georgijević’s Memorandum can be considered as their message to the ban, and not only Georgijević’s personal position.
