Summary/Abstract: High treason trial in Banja Luka 1915–1916 belongs to the most important court trials held in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the First World War. The first defendant, Vasilj Grđić, after whom the trial is named, a former member of parliament and the secretary of the “Prosvjeta” society, was designated by the authorities as the most important leader of the Serbian national movement in the provinces, who, according to the indictment, worked on the destruction of Austria-Hungary and the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Kingdom of Serbia. Sixteen people were sentenced to death by hanging, including Vasilj Grđić. The ultimate goal of the Austro-Hungarian administration was to crush the Serbian national movement in the country and transfer responsibility for the outbreak of war to the Kingdom of Serbia. The process attracted a lot of attention from the domestic and international public, and it served the Yugoslav emigration and the Serbian government in exile to discredit the Austro-Hungarian administration, which dealt with national movements in the monarchy with staged court processes.
