Summary/Abstract: The article examines parallels between the Hermann Brochs novel “The Sleepwalkers” and the Martin Buber‘s work “I and Thou”, which present symptoms and reasons for the degraded unity of an individual, a person and a society. The collapse of values, war, death in Broch’s novel “The Sleepwalkers” are manifestations of a profound transformative encounter that must restore man’s logical communion with God. The vigilant author has to seek ways to overcome death that would make possible the existence of a respectful dialogue with one whole human essence.
