Summary/Abstract: Sport originated in prehistoric times, as did ball games, which are attested across various regions of the world. In antiquity, ball games were characteristic of several ancient civilizations, including the Persian, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, and Roman worlds. The Romans synthesized elements of ball games from the territories they conquered into a distinct form known as „harpastum”. In different adaptations, the Roman ball game reached Gaul and the British Isles, where it underwent periods of notable development as well as prohibition. Ball games involving both kicking and handling the ball were practiced in Italy, France, and England. In England, modern football emerged after separating from rugby in the early nineteenth century. English football subsequently developed through the establishment of formal rules, the creation of a governing federation, and the organization of a national cup competition and league championship. The game spread to all territories reached by English sailors, giving rise to what may be described as the colonial empire of British football.
