Summary/Abstract: The Greek literature has not been „literate” from the beginning, but was born orally on the lips of the epic bard. Later on it will be written, as well, the natural performative context for literature, however, remains orality. It was not until the Hellenistic age that literature became predominantly written. In the wake of this process not only new ways of reception were introduced, but the general attitude towards literature changed radically, as well, which gave birth to a new hermeneutic practice, philology. Masters of this nascent science were both philologists and poets. In this paper I scrutinize some aspects of this paradigmatic shift: in what kind of cultural and social ambience it took place, which technical implements made it possible, and what kind of methodology evolved to suit the scope of this new understanding.
