WEST BANAT IN 1944. DISINTEGRATED BRIDGE BETWEEN ROMANIA AND CROATIA

Summary/Abstract: If in 1941 the Romanian-Croatian relations began, following a common border through the West Banat, in 1944 no interest of this topic was expressed on the agenda of the two capitals. The realities imposed by the evolution of the war, the partisan actions in Croatia, the new Romanian objectives envisaged a surveillance of the Serbian Banat area, but without real options. Both Romanian and Croatian officials reported actions and events that took place in the space between Romania and Croatia, administered by the German community in the area. The Romanians signaled the German political and military influence that proved to be present in the Banat territories, without any correspondence with the initial Romanian-Croatian objectives, the year 1944 consecrated the primacy of German strategic interests in the area, without offering any opportunity for the Romanian-Croatian collaboration in the area.
