PERSPECTIVES AND INTERESTS RELATED TO THE DELIMITATION OF A COMMON ROMANIAN-CROATIAN BORDER THROUGH THE REGION OF WEST BANAT IN 1941

Summary/Abstract: The wishes expressed by Romanians and Croats for a border that would unite their economic, political and transport interests were the subject of official discussions between the representatives of the two countries during 1941, starting on April 11. After the breakup of Yugoslavia in the same year, the emergence of the state of Croatia on the ruins of the former Yugoslavia raised hopes among both Romanians and Croats that they would be able to collaborate in common interest and against Hungary's expansionist tendencies. The Serbian Banat region played a crucial role considering the majority presence of the Romanian ethnic population, which preserved a distinct cultural identity. The turbulent history of Western Banat, marked by the efforts of the Serbs after 1919, to diminish Romanian influence through statistics, administration, the educational system and the church, was a mobilizing factor for Romanians in Banat in 1941, when the cultural society "Astra" managed to convince Ion Antonescu to initiate the necessary steps to restore ties with this territory inhabited by approximately 1/3 ethnic Romanians and to try to reintegrate him to Romania, actions that did not lead to the originally proposed result.
