Summary/Abstract: The study presents the various functions of the Bulgarian literature published in the cultural column of the German language periodical “Der Bulgarienwart”, and suggests possible motives for the publication of certain literary texts. The selection by the editorial staff of literary texts for print was not made randomly, and indicates how texts, including topics important for their time, were purposefully used to influence the readers’ thinking and actions in the context of the current events between the two World Wars. On the other hand, the following analysis shows how literature helped indirectly to improve the difficult economic situation of Bulgaria during this historical period.
