Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the history and functionality of the sculptural fable in a series of Russian ideological contexts. Aesop's labyrinth with fountains and fable plots in the fable forest of Peter the Great’s summer garden lies at the beginning of this tradition. The labyrinth is discussed in relation to the idea of the imperfect everyday life and the political spectacle, and to the ideas of the rehabilitation of laughter and fun, education and thinking through symbols. Stages of the mythologizing of the fable writer Krylov and his characters presented in sculpture are revealed in the contexts of the national ideology in the 19th century, and the Thaw and Stagnation in the 20th century.
