Summary/Abstract: This article is an “Introduction“ to the fundamental research project ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF THE CONTEMPORARY STATE, Volume II: Romania – member state of NATO and EU. Its authors started from the main idea that over three decades since the regime change (1989) – followed by accession to NATO (2004) and the European Union (2007) – are a sufficiently long time interval (in sociological terms: a generation) to make possible and necessary a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the performance of the major policies of the contemporary Romanian state in comparison with those of the other member states, candidate states, as well as other major states of the World. The volume analytically and critically examines the main policies of the Romanian state, in comparison with those of other EU and World states, in the main areas: economy, fiscality, public revenues and expenditures, public goods and services, social protection, digitalization, combating disinformation, alignment with EU political priorities, public and cultural diplomacy, constitutional and institutional relations of member states with the EU as a whole, freedom of internal movement, national defense, climate change and environmental protection, migration etc., and concludes with an analysis of the status of EU accession of two candidate states: Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
