Summary/Abstract: For the general public, literature written in Spanish and Portuguese on the American continent is generally associated either with the dazzling trappings of magical realism—which was enthusiastically embraced in our country in the 1970s—or, in recent decades, with the happy-ending stories of Isabel Allende. The exhibition “Latin America in Romanian Translations (1945–1989),” that I conceived together with Alina Ţiţei-Avădanei, an associate professor at the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iaşi, and that we presented in November at the “Eugen Todoran” Central Library, sought to help dismantle such stereotypes. Our aim was to show that the field of Romanian translations of Latin American literature is largely a product of Cold War cultural policies, and represents a particular, interesting, yet not very different case of import of foreign literature into the former socialist countries.
