Summary/Abstract: In the context of debates on the relationship between humans and their nonhumancompanions, or between nature and culture, as well as critiques of anthropocentrism andattempts to develop modes of thought beyond the anthropocentric paradigm, I examineselected recent theatrical productions. The analyses reveal several interrelated threads:human–nonhuman relations – what they look like, what purposes they serve, and what theydisclose about the condition of the posthuman; the climate catastrophe, histories of humancruelty towards nonhuman companions, and ways of (not) coming to terms with this legacy;thinking about utopia today, which shifts from unreal dreams to the sphere of micropractices; and finally the question of how these reflections, diagnoses, and performancesinfluence our understanding of the human. The article is grounded in critical posthumanism and poses the question of who the humanis, if not the measure of all things; how the human is practised in theatre; and what else thehuman might yet become.
