Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the evolution of the subject of the Revolt of Horea, Cloșca and Crișan from 1784, as in the Romanian interpretation, from the early years after the event until 1918, the year of the Union of Transylvania with Romania. The manner in which the revolt and its leaders are represented evolves in parallel with the development of historiography and identification of the national cause. It follows the evolution of historical information production, “professionalisation” of the theme, valorisation of foreign works, reinterpreted, as well as the fever of searching for new sources, writing the great monographs on the subject and its penetration into the great syntheses of the Romanians' history. Therefore, Horea, Cloșca and Crișan became from a practically non-existent subject in the first half of the 19th century, prominent figures in the gallery of national heroes. Similarly, historical narrative tends to level up as it establishes epistemological and axiological landmarks. The presence of Horea, Cloșca and Crișan then exceeds the patterns of historical writing, taking a turn also to literature, dramaturgy, poetry, art, but also political speech. Additionally, the article differentiates between Transylvanian area and that beyond the mountains, underlying the importance of the latter's contribution to the development and dissemination of Horea's logos; it focuses on the actions taken on the centennial of the revolt, emphasizing the importance of the moment; last but not least, the article tackles the recovery of memorial and heritage approaches taken in the latter part of the 19th century.
