Summary/Abstract: Avram Iancu (1824-1872) was undoubtedly the most representative historical figure of the Transylvanian Romanians during the period leading up to the unification of Romania on 1 December 1918. With a rich biography, culminating in the revolution of 1848-1849, the “King of the Mountains” was later adopted as a national hero by Romanians beyond the mountains. The present article analyses how the national cult of Avram Iancu was constructed and shaped between 1872 and 1918, despite the restrictions imposed by the state ideology, highlighting several episodes relevant to this development and finally focusing on the major historical episode of the 1st December 1918, when the Union of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania was established. Within the ideology and rhetoric of the Union, history itself had a dominant position, while Avram Iancu, as a national hero, became a landmark of any discourse with historical content.
