Summary/Abstract: This scholarly paper examines the oeuvre of Maximus the Greek, one of the most significant writers, religious thinkers, and encyclopedists in sixteenth-century Russia. An analysis of historical circumstances leads to the conclusion that the arrival of a monk endowed with polymathic knowledge at the time of Muscovy’s consolidation was both necessary and timely. The main objective of the research is to demonstrate how the creative work of the learned Greek predetermined numerous cultural achievements, literary disputes, and religious issues, thereby exerting a decisive influence on the social climate and subsequent Russian religious thinkers. By analyzing the works of the learned monk, the paper shows and substantiates that Maximus the Greek was a thinker in whom truth-seeking and ardor, spiritual sobriety and philosophical moderation, emulation of great classical authors, and at the same time the transcendence of their influence were uniquely combined. The author’s opus serves as a testament to his aversion to speculative philosophizing, while practical action and unwavering adherence to moral duty were primary, which makes him one of the first thinkers in Russian culture to zealously advocate the idea of the unity of word and thought. Furthermore, the paper elaborates on the cornerstone of his worldview, anthropocentrism, which in his case existed in harmonic union with theological positions.
