Summary/Abstract: The article examines the narrative of secularization dominant in the history of literarystudies, according to which the discipline shifted from a religious to a secular character.Latour draws on contemporary anthropological and religious studies that complicatethe concept of “the religious” and “the secular,” revealing their mutability and mutualconditioning. From this perspective, Latour demonstrates how attempts to distinguishthem shaped the discipline’s identity and historiographical framework. Finally, the articlediscusses recent literary studies that depart from the linear narrative of secularization andrevisit questions about the relationship between the religious and the secular.
