Summary/Abstract: Hrotsvit was a canoness at Gandersheim Abbey, where she composed dramas modeled on the comedies of the Roman writer Terence. She is considered the first female dramatist in the Latin West since the fall of the Roman Empire. In addition to her plays, she wrote Christian poetry and two historical poetic works: the first focuses on Emperor Otto I, while the second recounts the founding of her convent at Gandersheim. Hrotsvit’s writings provide valuable insight into the intellectual and religious life of the 10th century in the region of present-day Germany, during the rule of the Ottonian dynasty.
