Summary/Abstract: The importance of the Trebinje Captaincy in the defense of the borders of Herzegovina and the Bosnian ejalet, as the end of the 17th and 18th centuries where long and difficult wars were fought, stemmed from the geographical and geostrategic position of this area. After the conquest of Novi by the Republic of Venice in 1687, Visoka Porta initiated a project to build a wide belt of Ottoman fortifications, with the aim of securing the borders of the Bosnian ejalet. In this defense system, the new Ban Vir fortress, built on the foundations of an earlier fortress from the second half of the 17th century, played an impregnable bastion for the Venetian army and the Hajduk troops from Montenegro. Its construction was an economically very ambitious, expensive, but architecturally very advanced project, which was specially treated and financially supported by the Ottoman authorities in Istanbul.
