Signed or dated icons from Eastern Slovakia and their significance in the interregional context (16th-19th century)

Summary/Abstract: Icons from eastern Slovakia are among the most interesting manifestations of the culture of the region, where two worlds have met and coexisted for centuries – Slavia Latina and Slavia Byzantine. Although most painters remained anonymous, some signed or dated their works. Such monuments are excellent examples of supra-regional connections and landmarks in the creative time and space of individual authors or workshops. The oldest known signed or dated icons preserved in Slovakia were created in the first half of the 17th century. From an artistic point of view, they are quite diverse and are mainly associated with workshops in the territory of today's Poland and Ukraine, which are an important part of Ukrainian culture. However, shortly thereafter, icons signed and dated by authors from Slovakia also appeared. Gradually, significant changes in style and iconography occurred. The post-Byzantine tradition slowly faded into the background, and in the 19th century, Western elements began to dominate.
