Summary/Abstract: After the Hodža-Hattala reform, Štúr‘s written Slovak was gradually introduced into public life. From the beginning of the 1860s, it was gradually transformed didactically into the educational process at the first Slovak grammar schools. The basic teaching aids - new grammar textbooks and literature textbooks in the form of readers - were also created in the intentions of the new written Slovak language. In this paper, we evaluate the textbook for teaching ‘Slovak speech’ by Fraňo Mráz and the reader by Emil Černý, which were developed during the first half of the 1860s. In the two volumes of the Slovak Readings, E. Černý compiled a collection of thematically and generally diverse literary texts, mainly by Slovak authors from the time of the Enlightenment classicism. They became an important tool in didactic literary communication for Slovak grammar schools at that time. We also note Černý‘s efforts to create a literature textbook on a literary-historical basis in the form of a reader for upper grammar school classes. His conception of the periodization of the history of Slovak literature surpassed the previous perception of the history of literature.
