Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of the features of the formation and development of surnames of the Rivne region ‒ an ancient Ukrainian territory with preserved authenticity and linguistic diversity with the suffix -ec < *-ьсь on a Slavic basis. It is noted that the affix with Proto-Indo-European roots is inherited by all Slavic languages, is used to create general names to designate persons, surnames, and complicated morphemes. In Ukrainian surname formation, it belongs to productive formants. Surnames with a suffix have been attested in the Rivne region since the 16th century. Among modern surnames, they make up more than two percent of the research sample. A small part of regional surnames is formed in a lexical-semantic way from bases with -ec-, the majority by suffixal accretion. Among the derivational bases, proper names, noun, adjective, and verbal appellatives dominate.
