Summary/Abstract: The relevance and novelty of our study are explained by the lack of specific monographic works devoted to the contrastive study of the vocabulary of the Slovak and Ukrainian languages. Modern comparative studies are carried out mainly on the basis of comparing a Slavic language with one of the world languages. Contrastive study of the Slovak and Ukrainian lexicon allows us to identify a group of units that in the Slovak language have a single-word name, and in the Ukrainian language – a semantic equivalent in the form of a collocation. Meanwhile, we highlight the presence of a denotation in both languages and at the same time a difference in terms of expression. The article presents thematic groups in which the above-mentioned correlative pairs are most often noted. Among the reasons for the indicated formal discrepancy are the peculiarities of the word-forming mechanisms of the compared languages, which are demonstrated by the example of specific ways of word formation and various productivity of individual affixes.
