Summary/Abstract: The Danube river holds profound symbolic significance across the entirety of Slavic and Bulgarian medieval literature. In scholarly research, it is discussed as a unique element of the Balkan worldview and a key boundary marker of Bulgarian territory. Geographically significant elements essentially represent a transition into another space, which iswhy the Danube takes on the meaning of a liminal marker. In this article, the connotative profile of the river is further developed through an analysis of four texts that span distinct periods and facets of the medieval Bulgarian tradition—from the miracles of Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica to the historical ballads of the Banat Bulgarians in the 17th and18th centuries.
