Auditory Violence: A Prolegomenon to the Description of the Phenomenon

Summary/Abstract: This article aims to describe the phenomenon of auditory violence, its types and mechanisms, in relation to symbolic violence, the characteristics of contemporary media civilization, and the features of the living environment that shape cultural human behavior. In contrast to iconic violence, auditory violence may take both overt and covert forms. The manner, scope, and intensity of its impact depend, among other factors, on an individual’s auditory and cultural competence, chronological age, sensitivity and tolerance to various types of sounds, the level of auditory saturation in their environment, and cultural norms regulating the transmission and reception of sound.
