Summary/Abstract: Based on the memoirs of Agnietė Ambraziejūtė-Steponaitienė (Žvirgždė), a writer, educator, and medical doctor, as well as on the data of field research, the article identifies the authorship of the monument of Ambraziejūtė-Steponaitienė and Vytautas Steponaitis, a military historian, military officer and bibliographer, and their relatives, erected in Petrašiūnai Cemetery in Kaunas. There is no doubt that Ambraziejūtė-Steponaitienė chose the subjects of the drawing on the headstone for the couple and Steponaitis’s sister, buried in the second grave; however, the author of the engraved images and the executioner is sculptor Vladas Pleškūnas. He also sculpted the symbolic gravestone, a stone “book,” and engraved the text on it. The more modest gravestone of the second grave of Steponaitis’s relatives has not yet been researched, although the material, form, themes, graphic design, and execution of the two are similar. The authors of the article regret that, in the 1990s, the metal bas-relief of an officer, cast by the same sculptor, disappeared from Steponaitis’s gravestone. Using documents, recollections of visitors to the monument, and available photographs, the authors discuss its condition over different periods. They also intend to include information about the monument’s authorship in its heritage protection file.
