Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the history of research and conservation-restoration efforts concerning the architecture of the Church of St. Demetrius in Varosh, Prilep. By analyzing the church’s condition at the beginning of the 20th century through photographic documentation, we aim to establish a stratigraphy of construction interventions and changes in its conceptual design that occurred over time. These modifications began with the church’s initial foundation as a modest single-nave building and continued through to the late 19th century. The secondary alterations to the architecture were largely removed during extensive reconstruction and restoration efforts, which sought to restore the church to its most representative form, believed to have been achieved in the early decades of the 14th century. However, these interventions inadvertently erased five centuries of historical context. As well, the changes to the church’s immediate surroundings significantly altered the environment in which it had existed for over half a millennium. This study underscores the importance of understanding these interventions within a broader narrative of cultural heritage preservation. By critically examining both architectural changes and their implications for our understanding of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture, this paper contributes valuable insights into the historical significance of the Church of St. Demetrius in Varosh, Prilep.
