Summary/Abstract: The article summarizes historical facts regarding the dissociative anesthetic ketamine from its discovery, introduction into practice in human and veterinary medicine to its off-label use for the treatment of depression. It also discusses its abuse as a recreational drug with dissociative and euphoric effects. Finally, the potential of abuse of the recently introduced intranasal formulation of the pure S-enantiomer is also discussed (Spravato®).
