Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses how shifts in the political status and statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the Yugoslav federation during the 1970s influenced historiographical interpretations of the country’s historical development and the internal dynamics of Bosnian-Herzegovinian society. As a case study, it examines the interpretations of the historical significance of the 1878 resistance to the Austro-Hungarian occupation offered by two historically and socially influential professors from the Department of History at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, Milorad Ekmečić and Rade Petrović. The analysis focuses primarily on the views and arguments they presented at a 1978 conference dedicated to the resistance, while also drawing on other works that illuminate their understanding of the event’s historical significance and of key concepts of Yugoslav socialist ideology, namely anti-imperialism and “brotherhood and unity.” The paper further explores whether the Yugoslav crisis and the subsequent dissolution of the Yugoslav state brought about changes in the views of Rade Petrović and Milorad Ekmečić on these issues.
