Institutional Shaping of Knowledge On Medieval Bosnia During the Socialist Era, With Special Reference to the Research Project “Social Goal XIII/2”

Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the analysis of the developmental line of historiography on the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Middle Ages during the existence of socialist Yugoslavia. In particular, an attempt is made to identify various forms of influence of political institutions and levers of power on the production of knowledge about this period of Bosnian history. The first part of the paper is dedicated to the general attitude of socialist countries towards historiographical knowledge, and to a comparison of the situation in the territory of Yugoslavia. The previously repeated general view that in the territory of Yugoslavia the repressive pressure of the authorities was much softer than in the Soviet Union and other members of the Warsaw Pact has once again been proven correct and has received new analytical confirmation. The second part of the article deals with the evolutionary development of projects for writing a synthesis on the Bosnian history, which, one after the other, ended with a great loss of both time, reputation, and creative strength. Finally, in the final part of the text, the focus of the analysis is directed towards the specific development of the research project “Social Goal XIII/2”, its final results, and an attempt to understand the favourable circumstances that led to very positive final results.
