Summary/Abstract: In line with the broadly accepted metanarrative on the necessity of progress in the interwar social context and the Enlightenment mission attributed to all social forces, and under the hierarchical structures of discursive power—both those of the state and those within the Union of Women’s Associations in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes/ Yugoslavia—this paper offers an analysis of the dictated contradictions of women’s activism through the example of Sarajevo’s women’s associations (Dobrotvorno-prosvjetna zadruga Jugoslovenki, Ženski pokret i Udruženje univerzitetski obrazovanih žena). It becomes evident that these contradictions position them as subordinated and instrumentalized components of the ruling system and ideology, assigned specific functions and channeled responsibilities. In this framework, their women’s activist focus becomes depleted, and the dynamics of their activities are aligned with the political, economic, and social changes within the society itself.
