Summary/Abstract: In the Banat region, the development of museology was significantly shaped by the administrative framework of the Habsburg Empire. Early collections were predominantly private, assembled by scholars and governmental officials who cultivated a foundational cultural legacy. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy played a pivotal role in fostering cultural institutions, exemplified by the establishment of the Society of History and Archaeology in Timișoara in 1872. A prominent figure in Banat’s museological history, Zsigmond Ormós, generously donated a substantial body of artworks, thereby enriching the region’s cultural patrimony. Subsequently, Ioachim Miloia expanded the collection and advocated for the adaptive reuse of Huniade Castle as a museum space, cementing its role in cultural preservation. The Banat Museum’s Art Section became a platform for exhibiting works by distinguished artists, while the restoration of the Baroque Palace facilitated its transformation into the home of the National Art Museum. Timișoara’s recognition as the European Capital of Culture acted as a catalyst for modernization efforts within the museum, resulting in increased visitor engagement and reinforcing the institution’s cultural prominence both locally and internationally. This trajectory underscores the dynamic interplay between historical stewardship and contemporary cultural identity in the Banat region.
