Summary/Abstract: Organized crime represents the totality of crimes committed by members of well-structured criminal groups, with precise hierarchies and rules, who act in a mafia-style manner, in order to obtain significant material gains. This type of crime targets serious crimes, including drug trafficking and currency counterfeiting, and is based on the interdependence between these crimes, on criminal connection and collaboration. Drug trafficking is a criminal phenomenon that is in continuous ascent, being fueled and encouraged by corruption, violence, the possibility of laundering money obtained from drug trafficking, as well as the reinvestment of income obtained from other crimes in illegal drug-related businesses. Currency counterfeiting is a criminal phenomenon that is constantly manifested by the alteration or counterfeiting of national or foreign currencies. Counterfeit currencies are usually promoted and sold online, on the darknet, and are purchased and circulated by organized crime groups, in the legal or underground economy. Drug trafficking and currency counterfeiting, as forms of organized crime, are closely linked from the perspective of the goal pursued by the organized crime group, namely the achievement of illicit profit, but also from the perspective of the mode of operation. The cultivation, production, manufacture, experimentation, extraction or preparation of illicit drugs can be financed from the income obtained from the placing on the market or sale of counterfeit currencies, just as the production or manufacture of counterfeit currencies can be financed from the money earned from the sale, transport or delivery of illicit drugs. Drugs can also be purchased with counterfeit money, in order to defraud the dealer or intermediary, just as the transporter or deliverer of drugs can receive counterfeit money in exchange for the service provided.
