Summary/Abstract: The chance discovery of four Tatar coins at Suceava – Câmpul Șanțurilor provided the opportunity to analyze the rare discoveries of Tatar coins to the west of the Prut River, but also to discuss the almost unknown existence of the Suceava settlement before the princely residence was moved here.Although quantitatively insignificant, these discoveries are a testimony to a time about which only archaeological research can provide information in the absence of documents from that epoch. The fact that the city of Suceava is already mentioned in the List of Far and Near Russian Cities (dated between 1388 and 1391) proves its earlier existence, and the Tatar coins are evidence of a status which determined the author of the List to include it in the category of urban settlements. The Tatar coins were known beginning in the second half of the 14th century, based on the existence of some powerful settlements on the east bank of the Prut River, such as those at Orheiul Vechi and Costești, even though following the civil war in the Golden Horde, these would soon decline.
