THE ETHICS OF CARE: A GENDER PERSPECTIVE OF THE HISTORICAL, ECONOMIC AND EMOTIONAL DIMENSIONS OF CARE

Summary/Abstract: Care represents the foundation of human survival. Without it, it would be difficult to imagine the development of skills, interpersonal relationships, and the advancement of quality of life – both for those we know and those we do not. This paper provides an insight into the theoretical framework of the ethics of care, approaching it in two ways: on the one hand, as a basis for a more meaningful and humane life, and on the other, as a foundation of the gendered division of labour, which has historically caused numerous injustices to women. In explaining the feminist origins of the ethics of care, the paper relies on three key concepts: unpaid work, the care economy, and the emotional dimension of care. Unpaid domestic work, as historical and contemporary data show, has never been adequately valued – neither socially nor economically. The contemporary understanding of the care economy carries a dual connotation: on the one hand, it contributes to increased employment and reduces the burden of care placed on women; on the other, it often reproduces gender asymmetry through new forms of division of labour and responsibility. All these insights are equally relevant to Bosnian and Herzegovinian society, as evidenced by the data presented in the final chapter of this paper, which provides a detailed overview of the state of care and caregiving in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
