Summary/Abstract: The focus is on occurrences with the adjective inny [other] in contexts such as Umrę na zawał albo jakiś inny udar [I will die of a heart attack or some other stroke], Niech gola strzeli jakiś Klose albo inny Podolski [Let some Klose score a goal, or another Podolski]. These can be reduced to the schema X albo inny Y [X or other/another Y]. The first part of the article deals with the general characteristics of such occurrences: internal syntax, the possibility of filling in the X, Y slots, developing the whole with additional expressions. The second part considers the linguistic interpretation of the phenomenon. The fact that the understanding of the described occurrences is based on the regular meaning of constituents and complements, as well as the wide possibilities of filling open slots (including proper names) would argue for a textual interpretation of the phenomenon. An argument in favour of such an interpretation is also provided by the translation of the whole into other languages, suggesting that we are dealing with a more general pragmatic mechanism in language that may contribute to the effect of surprise or joke, rather than with a unit of language (in the sense specified by A. Bogusławski).
