Summary/Abstract: Sufi intellectual and practical endeavor has produced a rich literary corpus of diverse genres, serving as a system for organizing Sufi devotees through tekke, zawiya, khanqah, and other institutions gathered around a shaykh as the central figure of a stable dervish circle or tariqa. This form of organizational structure within Sufi activity, through the aforementioned institutions, contributed to the emergence of a variety of literary works that profoundly enriched the overall spiritual and literary output of Muslims — among which Jalal al-Din Rumi’s Mathnawi stands out prominently. Within this corpus, Sufi gnoseology occupies a particularly important place, as it has attracted the positive attention of numerous non-Muslim researchers toward Islam. The present paper focuses on Sufi tafsir in general, with the aim of highlighting its main characteristics and its significance for the spiritual refinement of the entire, richly developed Muslim literary tradition. Based on the literary sources of tafsir, it becomes evident that Sufi tefsir was subjected to very strict tefsir criticism. Nevertheless, despite numerous objections, Sufi interpretation of the Qur’an has secured its place within tafsir scholarship — and Sufism itself as a liberating way of life.
