Slava gifts in the modern urban environment in Užice and its environs

Summary/Abstract: The author quotes slava, one of the crucial elements of the Serbian intangible cultural herit- age, to write about the phenomenon of gift. Reference is first made to the notions of gift and slava and their origins. The instances of gift bearing for slavas in the modern context in Užice are offered to show the specific features of the gesture and the changes which took place in the past and present customs. Three aspects of the function of every gift are shown: economic, symbolical and social exchange of gifts between the host – the guest - the Church – the saint.
