Summary/Abstract: This paper is concerned with the concept od subalternity, exploring its evolution from the meaning assigned to it by the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci, who established the concept, to the changes in meaning introduced by the members of The Subaltern Study Group to contemporary definitions. The postulates of the three most renowned theoreticians in this field, Antonio Gramsci, Ranajit Guha and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, form the basis of the paper. A special attention is paid to the hegemonic/subaltern dichotomy and the omission of the subaltern subject from the mainstream historiography, the latter being exemplified by disparate accounts of the Indian uprising of 1857 and the Algerian revolution. The paper then tackles the issue of silencing the subaltern through the stories of two women, Chandra Chashani and Bhuvaneswari Bhaduri, whose voices are lost in the chasm between patriarchy and colonialism, and a brief analysis of M. R. Anand’s novel Untouchable, which links subalternity to low-caste membership.
