Summary/Abstract: In this paper we analyze the words and expressions meaning mediocre which are used in the modern Russian language to qualify objects located between opposite ends of the rating scale, since it has not been systematically described as an element of linguistic worldview. The method includes the analysis of the meaning and internal form of basic words for expression of mediocrity and their synonyms, as well as the analysis of phraseological expressions. The results of the research indicate a strong connection with the cognitive metaphors used to conceptualize the negative evaluation and a significantly smaller variety of linguistic means compared to those used to describe the extremities of the rating scale. Mediocrity is almost exclusively perceived as a negative quality.
