Summary/Abstract: Notwithstanding the vigorous debates that have recently animated the public sphere, we maintain that Romania’s legislation affords a robust and comprehensive standard of protection for victims of domestic violence. The measures set forth in Law no. 217/2003 are well-tailored to the complexities inherent in situations of domestic abuse, particularly in light of the fact that the Romanian State’s concrete actions in this field are subject to ongoing scrutiny by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, within the framework for supervising the execution of a cluster of judgments delivered by the European Court of Human Rights. There is a sustained institutional commitment within the Romanian State to identifying and addressing situations involving persons who find themselves in manifestly vulnerable positions with respect to domestic violence. This commitment is evidenced by the continuous operational efforts of the police, public prosecutors’ offices, and courts of law; by the Ombudsman’s consistent engagement with issues of domestic violence; and by the range of measures systematically undertaken by central and local public administration bodies competent in this domain.
