Summary/Abstract: The article examines the organization of the largest deportation in the Moldavian SSR in July 1949, with a focus on the southern districts – the region of compact residence of Bulgarians and Gagauz. Based on archival sources and oral history, the attitude of the Bulgarian and Gagauz population towards Soviet power, collectivization, as well as the repressions against ethnic Bulgarians and Gagauz in the years 1948 - July 1949, is considered. The author analyzes the factors underlying the repressions in localities with Bulgarian and Gagauz populations, the reasons and objectives of the punitive operation, the nature, and particularities of the processes and events that took place in the southern region of the Moldavian SSR at that time. The study explores the process of compiling deportation lists in the southern districts (Cahul, Comrat, Congaz, Ceadîr-Lunga, Taraclia, and Vulcanesti), high- lighting the role of union, republican, and local structures in this process. Additionally, the study emphasizes the social categories subjected to mass deportations in July 1949, thus providing a deeper understanding of the short- term and long-term impact of Operation „South” on the Bulgarian and Gagauz communities.
