Summary/Abstract: Priest Gheorghe Armașu (1914-1991), born in Bessarabia during the Tsarist rule and receiving his theological education in Chisinau during the interwar period, suffered severely under the Soviet regime, but remained faithful to his Christian and political convictions. He served in the churches of Khotin and Soroca counties and enjoyed the respect of his parishioners. His devotion to knowledge, his love for religious and secular books, which he collected and preserved, his knowledge of theology and history made him a true intellectual, an unrivaled ency- clopedist and polyglot. A worthy spiritual pastor, a patriot of his country, Gheorghe Armașu became a victim of the communist totalitarian regime after the occupation of Bessarabia in 1944. He was accused of anti-Soviet activity and sentenced to ten years of imprisonment in the Gulag labor camps, but the sufferings he endured did not break him. Despite threats and humiliations, he remained uncompromising, criticized the Soviet occupation regime and the lawlessness towards the Romanians of Bessarabia. He always believed in the restoration of historical truth, in the unification of Bessarabia with Romania.
