Summary/Abstract: In the first half of the 19th century, the city of Iași faced a series of anomalous phenomena: drought and famine, earthquakes and floods, rains with stones and storms, fires of large and small scales, which had devastating economic and social consequences, and also had a strong impact on the collective mind. One of the largest fires in this city, after the fires of 1827 and 1833, occurred in 1844. Then, the culmination of several fires of low intensity was a large fire on July 28, 1844, aggravated by strong winds, which turned several hundred houses into ashes, leaving thousands of people homeless. Considering the primitive way of building most of the houses in the city and the lack of water due to the drought that Moldova had been facing for many years, it is obvious why the fires caused such disasters and panic among the population. Rebuilding the city after such disasters was difficult, and the intervention of the authorities was absolutely necessary.
