Summary/Abstract: What characterizes effective (foreign language) instruction? What role does formative assessment play in this? How can formative assessment be implemented in classroom practice to benefit learners' success? What are the implications for professional teaching practice? These fundamental questions have always preoccupied (foreign language) teachers, (foreign language) learners, educational institutions, and educational and teaching researchers, as they determine the quality of (foreign language) instruction, and thus the learners' success and the effectiveness of educational institutions. Therefore, this article, based on key findings from teaching and learning research on the quality of (foreign language) instruction, focuses on formative assessment as an essential component of high-quality (foreign language) instruction and draws conclusions for foreign language teacher education
