Summary/Abstract: This paper gives an overview of the reception of the works of the German writer Wolfgang Borchert in Hungary up to the year 2023. During the communist period, the reception of the author's works began in 1958 and his popularity increased after the publication of the translation of his play in 1961, which was subsequently performed by several amateur theatres. Borchert's lack of ideological fixation – beyond his pacifism and love of peace – made him a suitable author for publication from the point of view of state cultural policy, while the Hungarian public sympathised with his lack of communist propaganda. After Borchert reached the peak of his popularity in Hungary in the 1970s, he and his life's work slowly faded into the background over the years and as a result of the cultural and political changes that led to the removal of de facto censorship.
